Like breakfast, mental health walks, and a little self-care, our philosophy for sunscreen is the same: every damn day. Finding SPF products for day-to-day wear and for activities like water sports and hiking can be a challenge, especially with so many options on the market. That’s why we put dozens of buzzy sun-care products to the test as part of our 2022 Healthy Beauty Awards.
For our awards, we considered thousands—and we mean thousands—of products submitted by brands, across a wide variety of categories like skin care, hair care, body care, oral care, makeup, and more. We selected what to test based on expert guidelines and then enlisted a group of more than 50 testers—including SELF editors, doctors, dermatologists, influencers, new parents, and more—to review each product for safety and efficacy.
Below, see the SPF products that wowed us, from Winnie Harlow’s impressive new line for melanin-rich skin to Coppertone’s beach-ready spray sunscreen. You’ll find expert-approved sunscreen for your body and face so that you can feel confident picking one that works for your skin type, won’t pill or clump under makeup, and basically guarantees a lovely day outside.

EleVen by Venus Williams Game. Set. Match. Body Lotion SPF 50
You’re already moisturizing your body every day, so you might as well use a lotion with SPF for nourishment and protection. This mineral SPF body lotion from Venus Williams’s EleVen is packed with a whopping SPF 50, thanks to zinc oxide.
Bonus points, per the experts: This lotion is an all-around great pick for folks with sensitive skin. Mineral SPF filters like zinc oxide are derms’ picks for easily irritated skin. This lotion is also formulated with soothing allantoin and bisabolol, which can help calm redness and irritation.
One tester said: “This sunscreen is amazing; It doesn’t leave a white cast, which is unusual in my experience with mineral sunscreens. It also smells terrific and is super easy to rub in. I wore this on my arms while on a hike and it did a good job protecting my skin from the sun.”
Hawaiian Tropic Mineral Translucent Sunscreen Powder Brush SPF 30
Fun fact: You still need SPF on days spent running errands, driving, or even just sitting in the office. Sunscreen powders like this one from one of our favorite drugstore brands, Hawaiian Tropic, make protection easy. Brush on the mineral-based powder over your makeup and you won’t even know it’s there—promise.
Bonus points, per the experts: Formulated with zinc oxide and vitamin C, this mineral-based SPF powder provides broad-spectrum protection against the sun and other environmental stressors. Another key ingredient? Silica, a mattifying agent that derms love for oily and acne-prone skin.
Just so you know: This sunscreen powder is fragranced, so it may not be ideal for folks with very sensitive skin.
One tester said: “I love this sunscreen powder! I wouldn’t wear it during any outdoor athletic activities, but it’s great for reapplication when I’m in the car or just out and about running errands. I like how it doesn’t take up much space in my bag, and it smells really nice. I’ll be purchasing another one of these when mine runs out.”
Badger SPF 50 Adventure Sport Mineral Sunscreen Cream in Tin
If you’re looking for a sunscreen that can hold up through long hikes, water sports, and other outdoor adventures, Badger’s hardworking mineral sunscreen cream is one to shell out for. It has a thick, emollient formula to protect your skin all day long, plus it only has four ingredients. What’s more, it comes in an eco-conscious metal tin, so once you’re done, you can wash it out and reuse or recycle it.
Bonus points, per the experts: This mineral sunscreen uses zinc oxide for SPF protection, and sunflower oil to nourish dry skin (and make the formula easier to rub in).
Just so you know: This sunscreen contains plenty of vitamin E, which can be great for dry skin, but if you have oily skin, derms agree that it might not be your best match.
One tester said: “This sunscreen is amazing. It’s a bit heavy for everyday use, but that’s what makes it perfect for outings like hiking or surfing because it stays on so, so well. It also comes in a cute and convenient aluminum tin. I love how it’s reef-safe, the packaging is easily recyclable, and it’s a simple but highly effective product.”
Bare Republic Clearscreen SPF 100 Sunscreen Lotion
Meet your new beach companion. Bare Republic’s Clearscreen uses reef-safe chemical filters, which absorb the heat from the UV and dissipate it to protect your skin. The lightweight, moisturizing formula and long-lasting sun protection wowed our testers.
Bonus points, per the experts: This SPF is enriched with vitamin E, which makes the formula easier to rub in, and derms say it’s a great ingredient for people with dry skin. It’s also formulated with antioxidants like carrot and raspberry, which work in tandem with SPF to protect the skin from the sun and other environmental stressors.
Just so you know: This product has an SPF of 100, which is great, but dermatologists say you only really need 30 to 50 SPF for optimal sun protection. (And it’s worth noting, using a high SPF is not an excuse to never reapply.) What’s more, it does have fragrance, which can be irritating for folks with sensitive skin.
One tester said: “I love this sunscreen! It comes out as a light, white lotion that’s quickly absorbed into the skin. It looks and feels more like a moisturizer than a sunscreen. My skin is very sensitive, but I’ve been using it on my face without an issue. It also has a nice clean fragrance to it.”
Mario Badescu Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30
There are many, many everyday face sunscreens on the market, but none wowed testers as much as this one from Mario Badescu. Beloved for its silky texture, it works as a protective primer under makeup or on its own.
Bonus points, per the experts: Mario Badescu’s mineral SPF is fragrance-free and formulated with 12.5% zinc oxide, hydrating and plumping hyaluronic acid, and antioxidants, ingredients that derms love for everyone, but especially folks with sensitive skin.
One tester said: “I am so happy I discovered this product—it took me completely by surprise and I will never live without it again. Typically mineral sunscreens leave my acne-prone skin even more inflamed and congested, but this did the opposite. The formula is light and melts into the skin with a few massages. It’s great under makeup and doesn’t leave a greasy finish. The silky texture was what made me fall in love with the SPF. I think this will last well over a month, even with multiple applications in a day.”
Cay Skin Isle Glow Face Lotion SPF 45
Finding a suitable SPF as a person of color can be quite the challenge, as many “invisible” options leave a white cast on skin, and tinted options often don’t have a wide enough shade range. Model Winnie Harlow’s Cay Skin brand is here to change that. This facial SPF became our tester’s holy grail after just one use—and it’s easy to see why.
Bonus points, per the experts: This face sunscreen includes niacinamide (vitamin B3), which dermatologists love for evening your skin tone, minimizing redness, and enhancing hydration.
One tester said: “OMG, this is the absolute best sunscreen that I’ve ever used, hands down. The packaging is cute and brown, which I love because there is finally a sunscreen that celebrates melanin-rich skin. I also love that this is Winnie Harlow’s brand; it makes using this product feel more empowering and special. The SPF itself is supersmooth and soft. A little goes a long way since it melts into my skin like lotion, and it has a subtle, refreshing fragrance that smells like sunshine. I will recommend this to everyone, but especially my brown-skin sisters!”
Coppertone Complete Sunscreen Spray
Coppertone has been in the SPF game for more than half a century, and the brand continues to keep itself relevant through innovative, effective sun-care products. This no-frills spray SPF won over our testers because of its dry-touch texture and convenience.
Bonus points, per the experts: This spray uses reef-safe chemical SPF filters.
One tester said: “In terms of convenience, nothing beats a sunscreen spray. This has a really great texture, in that it feels smooth and dry once it hits your skin, instead of feeling greasy like many sprays do.”
Coola Classic Face Sunscreen Mist SPF 50
On a hot day, a refreshing face mist can help you cool down quickly. Enter: This face mist from Coola, which delivers SPF 50 protection through a lightweight formula that goes on clear and soaks in quickly. Just…keep your eyes closed when you spray, please?
Bonus points, per the experts: A quick spritz of this face sunscreen delivers reef-safe chemical SPF protection, plus antioxidant protection through plant extracts, which help to reduce the impact of environmental stress on your skin.
Just so you know: This face mist is formulated with oils, which derms say might not be ideal for folks with oily or acne-prone skin. It’s also fragranced, which can be irritating for people with sensitive skin.
One tester said: “I’ve been on the hunt for a spray sunscreen so I can touch up my sunscreen even after I do my makeup. Coola’s sunscreen mist has a bit of an off-putting smell, but it dissipates quickly, and overall I really like the product. It didn’t make my skin greasy or leave a white cast.”
Everyday Humans Big Mood SPF30 Milky Lip Balm
Yup, your lips need SPF, too. Buzzy AAPI-owned brand Everyday Humans launched perhaps the cutest lip balm we’ve ever seen, fortified with zinc oxide for broad-spectrum SPF 30, plus softening and protective ingredients and recyclable packaging.
Bonus points, per the experts: The Big Mood lip balm is packed with oat milk, a soothing ingredient derms love for sensitive and dry skin (and lips). You’ll also find moisturizing jojoba and argan oils, and shea butter for a softening boost.
One tester said: “This lip balm glides smoothly, has a super mild scent/flavor, and it has no SPF taste! Truly, that’s the worst part about finding a protective lip balm for me—I cannot stand having the sunscreen taste in my mouth. This balm makes my lips feel moisturized and smooth even after it soaks in. I’ll absolutely be toting this to the beach (and everywhere else) this summer.”
EltaMD UV Stick Broad-Spectrum SPF 50+
A sunscreen stick that glides on is essential for easily burned (or forgotten) spots like elbows, noses, ears, and knees. EltaMD’s mineral SPF stick is a beach-bag staple for quick reapplication—and it’s formulated with skin-loving ingredients.
Bonus points, per the experts: Zinc oxide is the SPF powerhouse in this sunscreen stick, and derms say it’s very tolerable for all skin types. What’s more, this product is also made with cocoa butter for a rich, moisturizing feel that experts love for dry skin.
One tester said: “This was great! Like a grown-up version of the face stick we all grew up with. I really like the size and how portable it is to throw in a bag or backpack. It rolled on smoothly and my face enjoyed the process of applying sunscreen—often a rarity!”

Mineral Tinted Crème SPF 30
To keep your skin-care routine effective and efficient, look for fewer products with more powerhouse ingredients, like this universal tinted mineral sunscreen that’s fortified by vitamin C and antioxidants—plus SPF 30 protection.
Bonus points, per the experts: This tinted sunscreen is formulated with vitamin C, which dermatologists love for brightening dark spots and protecting skin from environmental damage. You’ll also find green tea extract, a calming ingredient that soothes redness, and hyaluronic acid, a supremely hydrating ingredient.
One tester said: “This is a great product. It is perfect for daily use—light, no odor, blends into skin quickly and easily, and is perfect alone or under makeup. I love that it has antioxidants in it so that there is additional sun protection beyond the SPF.”
Tower 28 SunnyDays SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen Foundation
Tower 28, the buzzy, sensitive-skin-friendly brand that earned acclaim from the National Eczema Association, impressed testers with its creamy tinted foundation. It offers 30 SPF through mineral filters and comes in cute, easy-to-dispense packaging.
Bonus points, per the experts: This SPF is boosted by botanicals like white sage extract and aloe, both of which combat redness and irritation.
One tester said: “Most sunscreen/foundation hybrids are low-coverage tinted moisturizers at best, and greasy at worst. This one from Tower28 is truly an excellent SPF and foundation that just happened to be combined into one product. It provides medium coverage that lasts all day, which is important in the summer when you’re at risk of sweating off your makeup every time you step outside. The brand has a wide shade selection too. This is one of the few times that I’ve actually finished a foundation—and I immediately ordered another one!”
